Brazilians Unite for Sisters' Centennial
You don’t have to speak Portuguese to hear the excitement as Father Cilta reports on an event that happens only once every 100 years.
A few Sundays ago, members of the Church of Santo Antônio de Taipas in the Brasilândia region of Brazil made history. They came together to show support for the Centennial Year of the Maryknoll Sisters.
The church's parishioners, who live near Sao Paulo, held a Mass to bring prayers to all the Maryknoll Sisters who serve there. The radio report by Father Cilta was broadcast in Portuguese over Radio Nove de julho, the archdiocesan radio station.
Among those present at the Mass was Maryknoll Sister Carolyn Moritz. She took these photos of a celebration she called “beautiful.”
This part of Brazil is home to the Guarani people, who are indigenous to a poverty-stricken area near Sao Paulo. Sister Carolyn has been part of a Church program that teaches women how to monitor the health of their newborns and children up to 5 years old. The program also focuses on the health of women who are pregnant.
Brazilians get two more Maryknoll Sisters this month. Sisters HyunJung Kim and Isabel da Costa Araujo are expected to arrive in Brazil soon to begin their first mission assignments.
