The Commitment to Love

Sometimes, when we’re caught up in the details of the Christmas season, we can lose sight of the “big picture.” Our daily lives are filled with responsibilities – shopping and baking, cards and gift wrap.

But when we take the time to stop and reflect on what we’re truly celebrating at Christmas – the Incarnation, God dwelling among us — everything changes.

Because Jesus Christ changes everything in an instant and forever, then and now.

Our Maryknoll Sisters working around the world have seen that reality year after year, as they spread the Good News of Christmas and the love of God to those in need each and every day.

Christmas is not just a one-day celebration for our Sisters; it’s a lifetime commitment, an opportunity to reflect God’s goodness to others and to recognize God’s goodness in others, in the face of the stranger, in the cry of the poor.

How do you reflect the spirit of Christmas to others? You may not realize it, but through your generous support of our mission, you're already reflecting God’s love to a world in need.Read our Christmas Appeal for ways you can help.  (PDF en Español)

Through the ministries Maryknoll Sisters offer to people struggling to survive day by day, you bring the hope and promise of Christmas to those who are waiting, praying for a sign.

Sister Dorothea Hudert, M.M., is a sign of hope to the people of Namibia, Africa, where she serves children and adults. A physical therapist, Sister Dorothea spent many years helping disabled children at the Oponganda Center for Children with Disabilities in Windhoek, Namibia.

She says she went into physical therapy because it was a way of “showing God’s love for people.”

Today she shows that love in a different way, as a chaplain for cancer patients at the A. Bernard May Cancer Care Clinic, where she gives people hope and comfort during one of the most critical times of their lives – their final days. Sister Dorothea, who is also a trained counselor for the Lifelines crisis phone line and a therapist for disabled teens at the Onyose Trust, is used to being with people in their darkest hours and deepest need. She welcomes every person who comes to her – whether in person or by phone – as if she is greeting Christ.

Our Sisters are ministering not only to the sick and the hungry but to those who help care for them. In every person they meet, they see the face of God, the ever-present reminder that Christmas is forever, that the gift we received over 2,000 years ago lives on today in us and in the people around us.
