Sister Sophia Aihara

"I became interested in Maryknoll when I was living in Kyoto where I saw the Maryknoll Sisters' wonderful works. I was attracted by their beautiful union of prayer and work."

Sister Sophia Aihara was born in Ashiya, Hyogo-Ken, Japan. Her parents and oldest brother are deceased, her other two brothers live in Japan. Sophia attended Sacred Heart High School in Obayashi, Japan and became interested in the Catholic faith during high school and was baptized in 1942. She taught for two years in this school after graduating from Kobe Women's College, followed by her B.A. in English Literature from Doshisha University in 1949. Sophia became interested in Maryknoll when she was living in Kyoto,"where I saw the Maryknoll Sisters' wonderful works. I was attracted by their beautiful union of prayer and work." She entered the Maryknoll Sisters in 1954 in New York and was assigned to Japan in 1957. She received her M.A. from Sacred Heart University in Tokyo, Japan in 1971.
