Sister Cheryl M. Allam

After laboring many years with the people in Japan, Sister Cheryl now serves on the management team of the Maryknoll Sisters' Development Department.

A native of Detroit, Michigan, Sister Cheryl M. Allam entered the Maryknoll Sisters in 1966 following a year of study at Wayne State University. She completed her undergraduate studies at Rogers College, Maryknoll, New York in 1971 with a degree in Community Service.

Assigned to Japan that same year, Sister Cheryl has worked in a variety of ministries: group work with women, adult education at Sophia University, work with recovering alcoholics, volunteer work at a homeless shelter for day laborers and a shelter for migrant women workers, both in Tokyo. She also served as senior editor of the The Japan Christian Review, an ecumenical journal on Christian life in Japan, and on the editorial board of the Japan Mission Journal, a publication on the Catholic Church in Japan.

Twenty years of service to the people of Japan was interrupted at mid-point to take up a position as the Congregation's Director of Research and Planning. This was followed by graduate studies in Asian Religions, focusing on Japanese Buddhism. She currently serves as a manager in the Maryknoll Sisters' Development Department.
