Sister Jeanne Schaedler
| "Most of my students are not Christians, but their loving care and concern for others is sometimes far greater than a believer." | ![]() |
Sister Jeanne Schaedler was born in Melrose, Missouri and worked for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith and Rawlings Manufacturing Company in St. Louis before joining Maryknoll in 1954.
Assigned to Korea in 1962, she made that country her home until 1999. Her first two years were spent in language study. She was head technician at Maryknoll Hospital in Pusan and began teaching English conversation to doctors, nurses and university students at several schools. This university ministry continued in Cheong Ju at Chung Buk University and with students at ChonNam University in Kwangju City where she served as an advisor to two student English study clubs which she formed. In these clubs, Building Better Community and Language Peace Group, she animated students to think beyond their own lives, reflecting on the poor and less fortunate; saving Mother Earth. English was not the priority, but rather building better communities, better relationships. They continue to form a community after graduation, when they go to other cities to work. "I feel the future of the world depends on these young adults, and we have to be there to help them along the road.”
Sister Jeanne served in Vocation Ministry for the U.S. and Canada, after which she became a member of the Eastern U.S. Region in 2005, and volunteered in a Chicago parish. In 2007, she and another Maryknoll Sister finally were able to fulfill their dream of opening a house in an African American community to welcome women interested in a religious vocation. Sister Jeanne is in a ministry of care in a hospital assisting patients and staff; works in a parish food pantry and visits homebound parishioners, especially to bring Holy Communion. With Sister Jeanne's smile and friendly spirit, she brings joy and happiness to many people.
In August 2011, Sr. Jeanne brought her smile, joy, and friendly spirit to the Sisters Center at Maryknoll, NY where she serves as a friendly visitor to those requiring health and social services.
