Sister Jackie (Jacqueline), from Boston, MA, entered Maryknoll in 1948. She studied at the Maryknoll Teachers College, where she obtained a Bachelor in Education degree.
Sister Jackie has a richly varied mission experience starting in 1953 in Boston Chinatown, where she spent six years working with youth. Sister Jackie was assigned to Tanzania in 1959 and became involved in teaching and administrative work, helping to establish both a girls’ middle school and a girls’ high school.
After Sister Jackie’s assignment to Kenya in 1974, she immersed herself in training primary school teachers in new methods for teaching Religion. She helped form a new Diocesan Religious Education Team and traveled throughout the diocese offering Religious Education workshops. Later she was invited by another bishop to work in a diocese located in Kenya’s northern desert. Sister Jackie and two other Maryknoll Sisters formed the Diocesan Development Education Team training nomadic leaders to identify problems of survival in an increasingly drought-stricken desert. Turning over their Development work in 1986 to local Kenyans, the Maryknollers moved south to another needy area situated in the Nairobi slums. There Sister Jackie and another Maryknoll Sister, assessed the needs and focused on working with women ex-prisoners who after being released from prison were often not accepted back into society. Seeing this need, they founded a rehabilitation program which taught these women income generating skills. After three years this program was turned over to Kenyan women to administer.
Sister Jackie continued working in Kenya, giving workshops and seminars to various groups throughout Kenya and other African countries. During this time, Sister Jackie wrote a book entitled “Women Seeking Justice” for women’s groups wanting to continue their studies of women and the bible. Years later, this book is still used in several African countries. Sister Jackie said a final goodbye to Kenya in 2005.
Over the years Sister Jackie gave Congregational Service. From 1972 – 1974 she was in charge of the Secretariat’s Central Files. She returned again in 1992 and worked in the Mission Institute until 1982. From 1992 – 1996 Sr. Jackie was the Congregational Service Coordinator.
In 2005 Sister Jackie transferred to Monrovia, CA. She was a member of their Leadership Team from 2007 – 2010. In November, 2017 due to failing health Sister Jackie she moved to the Maryknoll Sisters Center in New York where she currently resides.
