Easter: A Season of Hope Reborn

Soon we will celebrate Easter, the rebirth of Hope in a fractured world. At Maryknoll Sisters, wherever we serve, we strive to bring hope to the hopeless by making God’s love visible through our works and our life witness.

In the city of Moundou, in the African nation of Chad, hope can feel fragile. Families endure poverty and hunger. Many lack access to medical care, safe water, or reliable electricity. Violence and extreme weather add to daily uncertainty. Among the most vulnerable are orphaned children, many born with HIV, who receive little support and face an uncertain future.

And yet, even here, Hope is rising!

A Mission of Healing

The bishop of Moundou, Joachim Tarounga, shared a deep concern that his people were suffering not only physically, but emotionally and spiritually. Anxiety, depression, trauma, and grief were widespread, especially among orphaned children. In response, Sister Ngoc-Hà Pham founded Bien-Être (“Well-Being”) a wellness center integrated within the hospital in 2023. There, mental health care is offered alongside physical care, supporting the psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs of adults and children alike. In a culture where mental health struggles are often attributed to fear or stigma, this ministry is transformative.

Through counseling, physical exercise, nutritional support, and mindfulness practices, Sister Hà and her team are restoring dignity and strengthening resilience.

The Need Is Great… But So Is Your Compassion

Sacred Heart Hospital does not turn away anyone in need, regardless of religion. The local Church offers profound spiritual and moral support, but financial resources are limited. The suspension of USAID funding has made the challenges even greater. The needs are enormous, but so is the power of faithful generosity.
