Sister Shirley was born June 21st, 1945 in Greensburg, PA to Anna Rose (Sekuta) King and William King. She had one brother. Sister Shirley graduated from Greensburg High School, Greensburg, PA in 1963.

Sister Shirley entered the Congregation at the Maryknoll Sisters Novitiate in Topsfield, MA September 2nd, 1965 after studies for an AA and BS in Biology from Mt. St. Vincent, Riverdale, NY in 1971. She pronounced First Vows June 24th, 1968 at the Maryknoll Sisters Center, Maryknoll, NY and Final Vows April 7th, 1980 in Bolivia.

Her first mission assignment was to Bolivia, South America in 1971 where she spent more than twenty-three years serving the poor in Latin America. She worked in leadership development with women’s groups and health care in Bolivia, and made her final vows as a Maryknoll Sister in the jungle town of Riberalta. She was assigned to Peru in 1988 where In Peru, where she directed a large rural parish on the shores of Lake Titicaca. The population was mostly Catholic and lived high in the Andes Mountains.

She returned to the U.S. in 1988 when her mother became critically ill and accompanied her father at home until his death at 104 years of age. In 2001 Sister Shirley earned a Certificate from the Pittsburgh School of Massage Therapy, Pittsburgh, PA.

Presently, Sister Shirley works at the Sisters Center, Maryknoll, NY in the Development Department as photographer and visits parishes and schools to explain the Maryknoll Sisters ministries.
