EDUCATION

Education is one of the most powerful tools for changing the world, with research from the British Journal of Economics, Management & Trade showing a 0.62 correlation between education and poverty reduction. Studies by the World Bank further reveal that the ability to read and understand a simple text by age ten provides the foundation for workforce participation and a prosperous life. Yet, 124 million school-aged children worldwide remain out of school due to poverty, hunger, or illness. For over a century, the Maryknoll Sisters have worked to change this by providing education to those in need around the world.

The Maryknoll Sisters recognize the importance of education access and believe that every child should receive resources to learn. The sisters have opened up many schools around the world in places like Bangladesh and the Philippines, creating more economic opportunities for these children and their families.

Some parts of the world neglect education for young girls. In Tanzania, our sisters are pursing mission work that allows girls to receive basic education and achieve their goals. Sister Mary Vertucci founded the Emusoii Center in Tanzania and still operates it today, serving as a necessary tool for young women to become educated.

WOMEN’S ADVOCACY

The Maryknoll Sisters place a great value on support and advocacy of women’s issues. This dates all the way back to the time of our foundress, Mother Mary Joseph Rogers.

Our work for gender equality and advocacy can be seen across many borders. Sister Elsie’s work in Ecuador stems back to 1974– bringing justice to women who have been exploited and been victims of gender-based violence. She is able to continue her crucial work, despite the danger attached to it, because of supporters like you.

It’s very important for Maryknoll and for us who are out in the field with people who are excluded, whose rights are violated… I think it’s very important that people from the developed world reach out their hands to the developing world…. to empower these people to stand up for themselves, to be architects of their own destiny. – Sister Elsie Monge

FIGHTING POVERTY

Over one-third of the world lives in poverty. Every tenth person in the world lives in extreme poverty or on the equivalent of less than $1.90 a day. These heart-breaking statistics are the reason why the Maryknoll Sisters live to serve the poor. The sisters work diligently to create a community where the poor can flourish and rise above economic challenges. Some projects include trade schools, where young people learn to create material to sell and become financially independent. Sister Rolande in East Timor currently teaches young women how to knit and create items to sell, allowing them to create a source of income.

The Maryknoll Sisters witness poverty in their own backyard in Ossining, NY. Sisters who currently reside at our New York center participate in local volunteering opportunities, connecting community members in need to resources. The Ossining Food Pantry often works with the Maryknoll Sisters. This partnership connects our sisters with the people in the community, ensuring that the compassion that is given across the world is also shown to those next door.
